Evangel Bible Translators

Evangel Bible Translators (EBT) was founded in 1976 by Rev. H. Syvelle Phillips at the urging of William Cameron “Uncle Cam” Townsend, the founder of Wycliffe Bible Translators. At that time, Uncle Cam saw a need for Bible translators in specific areas that Wycliffe was then unable to fulfill. Pastor Phillips, having felt the call of world missions on his life for some years, knew this was what God had called him to do and set out to start EBT.

For more than 30 years, EBT’s main focus has been to provide the Holy Scriptures for people in their own language. In recent years, our emphasis has been on equipping native-tongue speakers to translate the Bible as opposed to funding Westerners to do this type of work. We currently have 19 translation projects underway throughout the world.

In addition to Bible translation, we enable our missionaries to reach out to their communities in addition to doing their translation work. As God opens the doors for evangelism, schools, medical services, and other forms of service, we encourage our missionaries to use the opportunities that God puts before them to meet the needs of people around the globe.

Furthermore, EBT sends out missionaries who do not work in the area of Bible translation. This is an area that is a growing aspect of our outreach as we seek to broaden our work in the world. Knowing that the Bible will one day be available in every language on earth, we want to be able to continue bringing the hope of Jesus Christ to everyone by providing services in other areas.

Evangel Bible Translators work to fulfill the Great Commission and the Great Commandment through Bible translation, evangelism, and showing the compassion of Jesus Christ.
